The class focuses on films produced from the 1950s to the present. The course puts representations of women in the historical contexts of race, class, and sexuality. Warning: This is a course designed for adults over 18 years of age. We will be viewing a decidedly R-rated material featuring sexual conduct, explicit language, violence, and on occasion- gore. This is the nature of the material and by staying enrolled in the class you consent to the terms of viewings. If a particular scene is too much for you, please feel free to avert your eyes or to excuse yourself for a moment or two. Course Policies Attendance: You are allowed one unexcused absence a semester. After that, you will loose 2 points off your final grade for each unexcused absence. You must be present at the beginning and at the end of the class to qualify as present. If you are more than 20 minutes late to class, you will be counted as absent for that day. If you are more than 5 minutes late to return to class after a designated in-class break, you will be asked to leave the classroom and will be counted as absent for the day. I practice a closed-door policy, which means that once the door is closed, you must stay in the classroom for the duration of class period. If you have a real and verifiable emergency that prevents you from attending a class, you must notify the professor prior to the start of the class and you must provide an appropriate and official documentation to excuse your absence by the next class meeting. Official sources include a doctor, dean of students, court of law, the police, fire marshal, etc. Notes from roommates, parents, spouses, or any other family members will not be accepted. It is your responsibility to follow this policy exactly. Film Screenings: We will screen films in class. These are considered to be an essential part of course assignments and you are expected to pay full attention to them in class. If I notice you engaging in inappropriate activity during the screening (talking, texting, checking facebook, etc) I will promptly ask you to leave the classroom and will mark you as absent for that day. Missed Exams: Except in the case of a real and verifiable emergency accompanied by appropriate and official documentation students will not be allowed to make up an exam. You must follow attendance policy exactly in order for a make-up examination to be even considered. All make-ups will be granted only at the full discretion of the professor Late or Missing Papers: Papers are to be handed in exactly at the time and the date when they are due. Absolutely no late papers will be accepted. Extensions will only be given in extreme and dire circumstances and the requests are to be accompanied by official documentation (see attendance policy) at least 24 hours before the due date. Extensions will be granted at the full discretion of the professor. No extensions will be given on the actual due date. Grading: The professor makes every effort to grade fairly and is always willing to discuss grades given on major assignments. However, I will not argue with students about grade change. In the event that a student still feel they received an undeserved grade after meeting with the professor, they should make their case in writing to professor within a week of receiving the grade. Although every plea will be considered, it will not automatically result in grade change. You will be given further instructions on the appropriate procedure later in the course. FINAL GRADES ARE JUST THAT: FINAL. THEY WILL NOT BE CHANGED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Class Communication: Professor will answer emails Monday through Friday 9am-5pm. If email is received after 5pm it will be answered the following day. I will not answer email Saturday or Sunday. On occasion, I will email the class as a whole via email or Ecourseware. Please make sure that you check that email account or have it forward to your regular email account. You will be held responsible for all communication that take place over email or Ecourseware. However, please email me directly to HYPERLINK "mailto:mlevina@memphis.edu" (Insert email address). If you need to schedule an appointment with me outside of my office hours, please give me an advanced notice of a day or two. I will not necessarily be able to accommodate requests for the same day appointment. Common Courtesy and Technology Use: You are expected to turn off your cell phones when you enter the classroom. If you text during class time, I will immediately ask you to leave the classroom and will count your absence as unexcused. While I will allow the use of laptop for note taking, I will not tolerate unauthorized Internet activity during class (email, facebook, etc). Again, I will ask you to leave and will count your absence as unexcused. Academic Dishonesty: I have zero tolerance policy toward plagiarism, cheating, forgery, or any other willful misrepresentation of yourself and your work. Please familiarize yourself with the Universitys policy toward academic dishonesty at HYPERLINK "http://saweb.memphis.edu/judicialaffairs/dishonesty/definitions.htm" http://saweb.memphis.edu/judicialaffairs/dishonesty/definitions.htm. Be assured that any willful of this nature will result in an automatic F for the course followed by an official report, and other university imposed sanctions, which may include expulsion. If you are not sure what constitutes plagiarism please fell free to ask the professor. Disability Accommodations: The professor will work to accommodate any reasonable request for disability accommodations. If you need accommodations, it is your responsibility to inform the professor within the first two weeks of class, register with Student Disability Services, and provide me with an official memo from SDS that summarizes your particular accommodation needs. I will ask for that memo before working with you on accommodations. For more information, please see HYPERLINK "http://www.memphis.edu/sds" http://www.memphis.edu/sds. Any student who many need class or test accommodations based on the impact of a disability is encouraged to speak with me privately to discuss your specific needs. Course Assignments and Grading You start the semester with a zero and then accumulate points toward your final grade. You can accumulate a maximum of 100 points. I do not curve grades and will not necessarily offer opportunities for extra credit: Participation (10pts) - Consistent, thoughtful, and active participation during class period will earn you a maximum of 10 points. You will loose points if you are disruptive to the classroom in any way that includes consistent tardiness, improper use of technology, lack of attention during film screenings, and other improper behavior Midterm Exam (25 pts) A 90-min exam will be administered during class time on 2/27 Research Paper (30 pts) - You will be asked to write a 5 to 7 page paper, which applies theoretical concepts covered in class to a critical analysis of a film. You will be required to do outside research on the topic. The paper will be evaluated on depth of analysis, quality of outside research, writing quality, and proper use of course readings. More details will be provided later in the semester. Final Exam (35 pts) A 120-min final exam will be administered during regular class time on April 30th. Graduate Students - Graduate students will be required to write a longer paper and answer additional questions on the exam. They also might be asked to do additional readings. Please see the professor for more details. Course Readings Sue Thornham (Ed.) Feminist Film Theory: A Reader. New York: NYU Press, 1999.
