Billy Brooks Jr.: Leading with Purpose in Healthcare and Beyond
Billy Brooks Jr., a native of Nashville, is a dual-degree graduate student at the
University of 蜜桃导航. He received his received his master's in Health Administration (MHA) this spring and is finishing his master's in Business Administration (MBA) this summer. Billy is already making an indelible mark on the field of healthcare
leadership.
Billy鈥檚 drive to enter the healthcare field is deeply rooted in personal experience. 鈥Growing up, I witnessed how healthcare systems impact families and communities, especially underserved ones,鈥 he shared. 鈥I pursued my MHA/MBA to be part of the solution: to lead, innovate, and make access to quality healthcare more equitable and efficient.鈥
A Focus on Operational Excellence
Throughout his graduate studies, Billy has concentrated on operational leadership in healthcare settings. His hands-on work has spanned projects like hospital bed management, clinical service relocation, space optimization, and patient access workflow enhancements鈥攁ll geared toward improving organizational efficiency and the patient experience.
鈥I want to be a healthcare leader who removes barriers,鈥 he emphasized. 鈥Whether that means improving access to care, designing more efficient systems, or creating welcoming spaces for all. My work is rooted in service and ensuring that the most vulnerable communities are not left behind.鈥
From Classroom to Boardroom
One of the most pivotal experiences of Billy鈥檚 academic journey occurred during his executive internship at HCA Healthcare, where he was selected through the Tennessee Hospital Association's Agenda 21 Program. That moment鈥攕itting at the decision-making table鈥攚as transformational.
鈥I saw firsthand how leadership decisions directly shape hospital operations and influence both staff and patients. It gave me clarity on the kind of leader I want to be鈥攐ne who listens, collaborates, and makes data-informed decisions.鈥
Mentorship That Matters
Billy credits much of his academic and professional development to those who have
mentored him along the way. 鈥Professor Mark Hendricks has been an outstanding advisor. His guidance and leadership have played a major
role in my journey,鈥 Billy said. He also acknowledged his mentor and preceptor at HCA鈥攁n alumnus of
the UofM MHA program鈥攆or helping bridge the gap between theory and practice.
Honoring Excellence: Top 30 Under 35 Recognition
In recognition of his academic excellence, leadership, and service, Billy was named one of the Graduate Student Association's Top 30 Under 35 honorees at this year鈥檚 GSA Awards Ceremony. This award celebrates the next generation of scholars and professionals shaping the future鈥攁nd Billy is certainly doing just that.
Looking Ahead
After graduation, Billy will begin an administrative fellowship at MUSC Health, where he鈥檚 eager to expand his leadership skills and drive change in healthcare delivery. His long-term goal? To become a hospital or health system CEO.
鈥I鈥檓 passionate about making a lasting impact, not just within organizations, but across entire communities. And I want to give back to the MHA program however I can. Supporting our new Program Director, Dr. Dale Sanders, is just one way I hope to contribute.鈥
Grounded in Purpose
When asked what keeps him going during the inevitable challenges of graduate school, Billy points to three pillars: family, faith, and future aspirations. 鈥Every late night or tough assignment is an investment in the future me.鈥
Whether in the classroom, at the hospital, or on the competition stage at the UAB Case Competition鈥攚here he proudly represented UofM鈥擝illy Brooks Jr. continues to lead with purpose, integrity, and a heart for service.
