Spotlight on Tony Lugemwa: Inspired to Leave the World Better than He Found It.

Tony LugemwaFrom Kampala, Uganda鈥攆ondly known as "The Pearl of Africa"鈥 Tony Lugemwa鈥檚 academic journey is as inspiring as it is impactful. Before arriving at the University of 蜜桃导航, Tony earned degrees from Clarke International University, Cavendish University Uganda, and Kyambogo University. Now graduating this December with his PhD in Social and Behavioral Sciences from the UofM, his path has been shaped by a mix of personal challenge and a commitment to creating meaningful change in the world.

Pursuing a Dream at the University of 蜜桃导航

When asked, "What led you to choose the University of 蜜桃导航 for your studies?" Tony said his decision was influenced by his advisor at the time, , whose guidance played a pivotal role in shaping his academic journey. His research focuses on reducing tobacco-related morbidity and mortality, with an emphasis on the connection between substance abuse and health disparities. This work, which addresses critical mental health issues stemming from risky behaviors, reflects Tony鈥檚 belief that a healthier population creates a safer, happier world. And he is passionate about 鈥渕aking a meaningful difference in the world鈥攖o leave it better than I found it.鈥

Tony鈥檚 time at UofM has been marked by significant achievements. He earned the prestigious Academic Equity Fellowship (2022-2023) through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and he鈥檚 held leadership roles as both President and Vice President of the Public Health Student Association. His research contributions include projects on tobacco cessation in Syria, a systematic review on suicidal ideation among women and girls in South Asia, and an analysis of methamphetamine-induced sleep challenges published in Substance Use & Misuse.

The International Student Experience

Tony has developed virtues like patience and understanding, enabling him to connect with people on a deeper level. His most memorable moment? The day he successfully defended his dissertation, October 16, 2024, a milestone he treasures.

Looking Ahead

Post-graduation, Tony plans to pursue a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship or an Assistant Professor position. He dreams of traveling to Europe, Asia, and Australia while continuing to use his skills toTony Legumwa serve others.
