In the United States, J-type visas are nonimmigrant visas that allow foreign nationals to participate in the . This program allows university-level students, professors, researchers, and specialists to reside in the US while they complete an approved program related to their status, such as study, lecturing, research, consulting, etc. By extension, the University of ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½' Exchange Visitor Program allows UofM students to study at bilateral partner universities abroad while also hosting foreign J-1 Students and J-1 Scholars in ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½.
"(J-1) Exchange Visitors" refers collectively to J-1 Students and J-1 Scholars. J-1 Students - also referred to as Exchange Students - are university-level students studying at the UofM for a semester or academic year through a bilateral exchange agreement between the UofM and students' home universities, while J-1 Scholars refers to visiting professors, researchers, and specialists as well as scholars and university-level students attending the UofM through the US government's Fulbright Program. Often times, J-1 Scholars will be hosted by faculty and academic departments at the UofM.
