Bachelor of Science in Health Studies

Undergraduate | Accelerated BS/MS

The Dietetics program prepares students with a strong foundation in food and nutrition, food science, the biological and physical sciences, social sciences, research, management, and healthcare systems. Through a combination of classroom learning and applied experiences, students develop the knowledge and skills needed for success in supervised practice and graduate education. This program is designed for students who aspire to become Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) and pursue careers that improve the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities.

The Exercise, Sport & Movement Sciences program provides a comprehensive exposure to the field of exercise science, with coursework in areas such as kinesiology, physiology, biomechanics, motor behavior and exercise program design. The program is ideal for students planning to pursue graduate study in areas such as physical therapy, chiropractic medicine, or exercise science, as well as for those desiring employment in personal training and strength and conditioning.

The Health Sciences program is grounded in health promotion and lifestyle medicine, providing students with a strong foundation in evidence-based strategies that support health behavior change, disease prevention, and overall well-being. Guided electives allow students to tailor their program to meet specific career goals. The program prepares graduates for advanced study in allied health fields (e.g., occupational therapy, physician assistant, health promotion) or careers in health and wellness coaching, worksite wellness, and public health.

The online program in Healthcare Leadership provides a comprehensive exposure to the field of healthcare administration, with coursework in areas such as the healthcare environment, professionalism, leadership, business skills and communication. The program is ideal for students planning to work in healthcare administration (e.g., HMOs, hospitals, nursing homes) as a healthcare administrator (not as a clinician).

Undergraduate

The Human Nutrition program provides a strong, science-based foundation in biology, chemistry, nutrition, culinary medicine and research—with multiple electives to tailor coursework toward individual graduate school and career goals. Due to the heavy basic science focus of this program, it is ideal for students planning to pursue graduate study in medicine (MD, DO), nutrition science and related areas of study in which a strong scientific background is needed, while also meeting the needs of students desiring to gain knowledge in the field of nutrition science, without the desire to become a registered dietician/nutritionist (See Dietetics program if this is the goal).

The Sport Coaching program is designed to provide instruction in areas such as coaching individual and team sports, athlete motivation, sports performance, administration and leadership, as well as officiating techniques and instruction. Professors seek to train forward-thinking students to be the coaches who will lead the next generation of athletes in the fast-paced world of sport. The program is ideal for students planning to pursue a career in coaching, whether it be at the youth, collegiate or professional level. NOTE: this program does not result in teaching licensure.

This Physical Education Teacher Education program provides instruction and student teaching experience to prepare students for employment as a licensed physical educator and wellness instructor. The program is fully accredited and led by a vibrant and productive group of faculty educators who are nationally and internationally recognized for their teaching and scholarship. This program is ideal for students desiring to be a licensed K-12 physical education and wellness teacher.

The Sport and Entertainment Management program prepares students for careers in the business and management of sport and entertainment organizations. Students develop expertise in marketing, finance, promotions, governance, leadership, legal issues, and organizational management while gaining hands-on experience through applied learning opportunities. The program emphasizes ethical leadership, strategic decision-making, and professional engagement, preparing graduates for careers in professional and collegiate sports, entertainment organizations, event management, sport marketing, sales, sponsorship, and related industries. This program is ideal for students desiring to work within sport and entertainment organizations, in a variety of capacities.

Undergraduate Minor

The 18-credit hour Nutrition, Health & Wellness minor is available to all students, regardless of major. Program coursework is designed to enrich a current plan of study by providing knowledge in the areas of nutrition and wellness.

Undergraduate Minor

The 24-credit hour Personal Training minor is available to all students, regardless of major. Students are immersed in didactic (traditional, lecture-based) and kinesthetic (physical activity) courses to develop a better understanding of key concepts related to personal training, with the program designed to prepare students to sit for professional personal training certification exams.

The 24-credit hour Medical Assisting minor is available to all students, regardless of major. Program coursework prepares students to work as a medical assistant, gaining valuable experience as an important member of the healthcare team. This program is of particular value for students planning to pursue graduate study in the medical field, knowing that patient contact hours are needed to be competitive for graduate school acceptance.

Undergraduate Minor

The 24-credit-hour Strength and Conditioning minor is available to students pursuing the Exercise, Sport & Movement Sciences concentration within the Health Studies major. This minor is professionally accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Strength & Conditioning Education (CASCE). It prepares students with the necessary knowledge and practical skills needed to sit for the internationally recognized Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) exam offered by CASCE. As of January 2030, only individuals who have a bachelor’s degree and have completed a CASCE-accredited program are eligible to take the CSCS exam.

The 18-credit-hour Tourism Management minor equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the global tourism industry. Students explore tourism operations, destination marketing, sustainability, cultural experiences, and management while developing expertise in customer service, destination planning, and responsible tourism practices. The minor complements a variety of academic disciplines and prepares graduates for careers across tourism, hospitality, events, recreation and destination management.

he 18-credit-hour Esports minor equips students with fundamental and advanced knowledge of the rapidly expanding esports industry. Students explore esports business, marketing, events, media, management, and culture while developing skills in leadership, strategic planning, fan engagement, and event operations. The minor complements a variety of academic disciplines and prepares graduates for opportunities across esports, gaming, sport, entertainment and technology-related careers.
