Undergraduate Curriculum

Sociology Major | Sociology Minor | Sociology + Law Combination Degree | Accelerated B.S./M.A. Degree

Sociology Major

To receive a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree with a major in sociology, you must complete the University's general education curriculum, the requirements of the sociology major, and all other total hours requirements set by the University. The entire major requires 33 hours - 18 are core courses (listed below) and 15 are upper division electives that focus on issues that interest the student. One of our primary goals is to provide our majors with a comprehensive liberal arts education centered on sociology as an approach to life.

Sociology Minor

Students with majors in other disciplines may choose to enhance their professional qualifications with a minor in Sociology. The Sociology minor requires a total of 18 hours.

Requirements

  • 15 upper-division hours in SOCI

Sociology/Juris Doctor Combination Degree

One of the common career pathways for sociology graduates is in the legal profession. Program objectives for a Sociology B.S./J.D. degree are: (a) developing an understanding of and competence in the major theories, statistical techniques, and methodological approaches of sociology; (b) developing theoretical, substantive, and methodological knowledge to conduct research or analytic projects; (c) preparing for employment in the legal field.

Note: While the combined BS/JD program is designed to accelerate the time to graduation, enrolling in the 3+3 program at the BS level does not automatically grant admission to the JD program. All admission decisions are based upon a holistic assessment of all application materials submitted. If admitted, 3+3 students will start as first-year law students at the beginning of what would have been their senior year. These students will complete certain sociology requirements and general upper-division electives by taking first-year law school courses. Unsuccessful applicants will complete their undergraduate degree in sociology as seniors, and may apply to law school following the usual timeline and procedures.

Senior Year of Undergraduate Study

First Year Law School Curriculum (32 credit hours shared between the B.S. degree and the J.D degree)

Accelerated B.S./M.A. Degree

This program allows outstanding undergraduates to begin the coursework for the Master of Arts in Sociology during their senior year. Students are encouraged to begin planning to enter the Accelerated B.S./M.A. program early in their undergraduate career, in consultation with their advisor in the Department of Sociology.

Working with the undergraduate and graduate academic coordinators, undergraduates selected into this program begin a carefully tailored course of study which will allow them to complete their B.S. degree while they also begin the coursework toward their M.A.

To apply, students must have a minimum 3.25 grade point average, and must submit two reference letters and a copy of their transcript to the Sociology department. Each applicant will complete an interview with the graduate academic coordinator in sociology.

Students must also apply to the Graduate School for the accelerated B.S./M.A. program, which allows them to take graduate courses in sociology. To continue in the program past the B.S., students must apply for full admission into the Graduate School and into the Sociology department鈥檚 M.A. program.

Only in ABM programs, up to 12 hours of graduate course work may be applied to both the undergraduate and graduate programs. However, any graduate coursework will not apply to undergraduate GPA.
